Donnie Hamzik was never be a member of Manowar.He just help the band to make the first album(Battle hymns).I t hink im not sure that he was belong to an other band then.Why he left the band I don't know but the other question I can answer: He left Manowar in 1983. He only played the drums on the album "Battle Hymns".

My mistake.I was read an republication of biography which said that Manowar shortly before come to studio to make the first album ,their drummer Carl Canedy leave the band ,and they looking for new drummer.One night joe as he go for a drink with some friends ,they're going to a club where playing unknowns bands ,and there he saw Donnie Hamzik.He impess from his talent and he ask him to help Manowar to prepare the Battle hymns. When they finnish the album they signing on Scot for tour . For that I was believe that he wasnt member of Manowar.

I'm not sure how accurate this is but I don't find it conflicting with anything else I have heard.
Yes this is one of the things that I had read.
